Researchers have learned that being romantically in love goes way beyond passion.
You know those SSRI’s that depressed people take? What’s in them? Well, they stand for “selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors.” The idea is to inhibit – stop – the re-absorption back into the body of the serotonin that is produced.
Serotonin – don’t ever mistake this – does not give you a “high.” Sorry. Rather, serotonin keeps you even-keeled. It brings the down person up just a wee bit, a tiny bit. Even. Not high.
Interestingly, when a person has OCD, obsessive compulsive disorder (I do not believe in these labels, but need to refer to it in the current example; you’ll see why), they do not have normal amounts of serotonin in their brains.
But guess what?
When people are “in” love, they obsess about the person they love – day and night. And – wouldn’t you know it? – researchers have found that just like depressed people, they are missing serotonin.
So according to this, being in love is like having Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. (It’s certainly not like being depressed, but we can’t get into brain chemistry right here.)
Who would want that?
Everyone, apparently.
Being in love is also happy, joyous, makes life worth living and – connects you deeply to one particular person.
Can we get there?
